Info: I have been going through my late father’s personal papers and came across a handwritten (and stamped with a 2d stamp) receipt for Triumph Herald 1960 Saloon 948cc Registration No YAX 354, sold on 3rd July 1961 by cheque to my father, Dr Neil Macmillan, for £550 by a seller (the surname I think is Murray) who lived at 5 Lisvane House, Mill Road, Lisvane, Cardiff (tel no. 54312 The chassis no was 47005 and the Engine no was 41400.
My father would have been 24 at the time, and I suspect it was an early 25th birthday present to himself as it was 2 days before his birthday. At aged 6 months one of my first holidays in September 1964 was to go from Whitstable in Kent, where we lived, to north of Lochinver in Sutherland, a not inconsiderable undertaking with the roads at that time. I recall that the car was a pale blue colour I think, and very possibly two tone. On that holiday a sprig of heather dragged underneath the car (it was a brief dry spell in Scotland!) and according to my mother, caught fire and had to be put out with coffee from a thermos flask. |
