The second car was bought for parts to keep MEJ on the road, when I was living in Liverpool. Its registration number was MEN 376, which I think originated in Preston, Lancs. Another cherished number opportunity lost! It was also a 1961 with Alpine Mauve interior, but this one was also painted in Alpine Mauve, and looked very smart (for a scrapper)

Info: It got me thinking about the only two 948 convertibles I've owned, both now long gone I'm afraid. Firstly, MEJ 896 was a Pale Yellow 1961 convertible with Alpine Mauve interior. I think it was originally sold in Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire, and I bought it in 1968 when I was 22. It replaced the first car I'd ever owned, a Morris Minor series 2 with 803cc engine which exemplified the expression "underpowered..." it hardly had the energy to get out of its own way, so I thought I'd go for something a bit sportier next time. It had to be open-top, and look the business, (and be possible to insure!) so the Herald was just the job. I kept it until around 1975, by which time it had become a 1200 mechanically, and I'd also "updated" the dash and interior. Some might say "what about originality?" but I didn't know any better in those days...
It finally gave up the ghost and was left to moulder away in a local farmer's field who fancied himself as a car-breaker, but not before it had passed on its registration number to one Malcolm Edwin Jepson in an early example of cherished numberplate transfer. I think I got £15.00 for the plate, I think it might be worth a bit more than that now!
